These past few weeks 125 students from the school IES Manuel Tárraga Escribano in San Pedro del Pinatar have participated in volunteering activities with the LIFE Salinas Project, organized by ANSE and Pinatar Natura. These activities aimed to study coastal flora and fauna as well as the characterization of marine waste.
As a result of these activities, a total of 2.846 objects were removed from the beaches of the “Regional Park Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar” and the Mar Menor, 55% of which were plastics. Of all of the objects removed, 556 were cigarette buds.
The complete results were collected via the app eLitter. This application allows for the characterization of abandoned waste found on land with the objective of estimating their abundancy, origin and movement. This data is fundamental in order to prioritize actions aimed at the prevention and elimination of said waste.
