Between the 1st and 7th of May of 2022, members of the LIFE Salinas Project visited different salt pans located in Slovenia and Croatia. This activity is performed within the framework of the “E4 Action Networking with other projects”, which aims to interchange experiences and improve collaboration between diverse salt pan territories.
During said trips, the team had the chance to visit the salt pans of Sečovlje, located inside a Natural Park of the same name on the coast of Slovenia. What stood out here was the effort put into the protection of cultural heritage found within these salt pans, as well as the conservation projects that take place and the relation between conservation efforts and the production of salt.
Additionally, the team members visited a salt Museum in Fontanigge, dedicated to the salt pans located in the Natural Park. This museum is located in a reconstructed old housing estate for salt workers.
Another location that the LIFE Salinas team visited was a bathhouse in Lepa Vida, Slovenia. The bathhouse offers massages as well as baths with salt, mud or saltwater. This bathhouse was built with the aim of diversifying the economic activities which take place at the salt pans.
The team also visited the salt flats of Pag, the largest found in Croatia, which appeared to have a more industrial environment in comparison to the other salt pans.
Finally, the team had the opportunity to visit the salt pans of Nin. These salt pans are managed by a private company, which in addition to the production of salt, also performs guided tours, has a museum within the saltworks complex and a shop selling products related to salt production.
Currently, these salt pans produce around 20.000 tons of salt at year, providing employment for around 20 families.
