The Mar Menor General Director visits the actions of the LIFE-SALINAS Project

The Mar Menor General Director, Miriam Pérez Albaladejo, visited to the Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar Regional Park on May 14, 2020. There, Julio Fernández, director of Salinera Española S.A. and Gustavo Ballesteros, coordinator of the LIFE Salinas Project, showed her some of the actions that are taking place. The actions include the creation of new dams for the separation of salt ponds, using the substrate from the ponds. This action will mean an improvement in the quantity and quality of the salt, since the new dams will increase the route that the water makes through the salt circuit. In addition, the birdlife also benefits, since the construction of these new dams with the substrates from the salt ponds creates a habitat practically devoid of vegetation, very conducive to waterbirds that nest in this protected space.
Miriam Pérez was surprised by the high biodiversity and number of colonial breeding birds that are being favored by the LIFE Salinas Project, such as the Audouin gull, gull-billed tern, sandwich tern, pied avocet and black-winged stilt, as well as the newly Ardeid colony installed.
