This past month Mae d’Agua, the University of Murcia and IPAISAL presented their E3 proposal at the XX Congreso de la Asociación Ibérica de Limnología (AIL-2020) / III Congreso Iberoamericano de Limnología (CIL-2020), titled “The certification of salt as a product, process and landscape: a tool to assess NCP of saline wetlands”.
This E3 proposal consists of creating a tool which permits the certification of salt production, respecting both the quality of the product as well as the conservational objectives of the saline wetlands.
If the saline wetlands are located inside a protected area, the production of salt must be compatible with the laws regarding protection and planification.
The certification, currently being formulated, is being tested in four solar saline wetlands located in Spain and Portugal. It is expected that this certification will be applicable to all saline wetlands of this type, regardless of size, location or the scale of salt production, including both coastal and interior wetlands. Outside of the LIFE Salinas project, there will be a permanent secretary in charge of the administration and certification of any saline wetlands should they request it.
