After the storms that have affected in recent months the coast of the Regional Park ‘Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar’, the partners of the LIFE Salinas Project have taken the measure of protecting the dune front with organic rests of Posidonia oceanica plant .
This action is due to the fact that after the temporary ‘Gloria’ and in the case of La Llana Beach, the dunes retreated in some sections between 3 and 5 meters. This is a big problem, because after the Posidonia, the dunes are the main barrier of protection so that the sea water does not reach the salt ponds, with the consequent loss of habitats.
The protection of the coast with organic rests of Posidonia dampens the impact of the waves, controlling erosion and the progressive loss of sand. The dunes, supported by vegetation and molded by the wind, are a reservoir of sand and constitute the habitat of species of flora and fauna that are very important for the ecosystem.
