On Sunday, the 17th of February, took place the visit to the salt ponds of the Regional Park on the occasion of World Wetlands Day which could not be celebrated on its official date due to bad weather. This event was attended by 31 people from all ages who came to learn about these areas and the fauna and flora associated to them. It is very important to raise awareness about the importance of wetlands since they are ecosystems with great biodiversity that regulate the water cycle and climate, as well as being habitats for endangered fauna.
The Park is considered a Ramsar Site, designated to be of international importance under the Ramsar Convention since the Audoin’s gull lives there regularly. The World Wetlands Day is celebrated on February 2 commemorating the signing of the Convention on Wetlands in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971. This agreement advocates the conservation and rational use of wetlands as they are exceptional places for fauna and flora and participate in the regulation of floods and droughts. In Spain there are 75 Ramsar sites, 3 of which are located in the Region of Murcia: Mar Menor, Lagunas de Campotéjar and Lagunas de las Moreras.
