The Coterillo pond, which is located very close to the Torre Derribada beach, and next to the pine forest of the same name, was created in the 1980s with the aim of conserving the populations of fartet (Aphanius iberus), an endemic Mediterranean fish with very special requirements for their survival.
For many years it has frequently had high levels of salinity due to difficulties in water circulation, with loss of its biodiversity and the disappearance of the fartet population.
The LIFE SALINAS Project works on this problem, creating a good water inlet and outlet system that allows the recovery of fartet populations, recovery of the depth of the pond, as well as adapting motes and islands to facilitate the reproduction of aquatic birds .
The works, carried out by Salinera Española (coordinating partner of the Project), are in a very advanced phase, with the connection of the pond with the salt circuit through a green infrastructure, although the works that allow the water to escape are still pending and the performances inside.
We will continue to inform as the works progress …
