Signing of the agreement to carry out the LIFE-Salinas Project

On August 13th, 2018, the Mayor of San Pedro del Pinatar, Visitación Martínez, the General Director of the Natural Environment, Consuelo Rosauro, and the Manager of Salinera Española, Julio F. Fernández, along with the Councillor for the Environment, Pedro Javier Sánchez and the coordinator of the LIFE-Salinas Project, Gustavo Ballesteros, signed the association agreement between Salinera Española S.A., the Council of San Pedro del Pinatar and the Regional Government of Murcia to develop the LIFE Project: “Conservation of habitats and aquatic birds in the Site of Community Importance (SCI) and Special Protection Area (SPA) ES0000175: Salinas and Saltflats of San Pedro del Pinatar”.
As a result, the conservation of two significant natural areas such as the salinas and the dune system of La Llana Beach will be enhanced. In addition, new measures will be taken in order to improve the habitat of the avifauna and ichthyofauna, especially the Audouin’s gull and the Fartet fish (an endangered endemic species). The salt production activity will also be improved, demonstrating a sustainable development model compatible with the preservation of essential elements of European biodiversity, the generation of an economic resource with the production of salt, and sun and beach tourism, and the creation of employment in the region.
